When to get help
An ITIN rejection that blocks a refund with a deadline is worth help from a certifying acceptance agent.

The first move

Match the notice to the application you filed. Most of these are confirmations, renewals, or a request for one missing document.

What letters in this family have in common

An ITIN (CP565 assigned, CP566 more information needed, CP567 rejected, CP48 about to expire) is issued to people who need to file but cannot get a Social Security number. ITINs expire when unused for three years and the CP48 warns you. An EIN (CP575 series) is confirmed once and rarely generates a notice again unless the name or responsible party changes. CP547 to CP549 concern preparer tax identification numbers. CP560 to CP584 cover ITIN and adoption ID processing steps.

A rejected ITIN application usually means a document was not certified correctly or the return it was attached to had a problem. The notice says which.

What to gather

  • The notice
  • The application you filed (W-7, SS-4, W-7A)
  • The identity documents you submitted or need to submit
  • The return the ITIN application was attached to

How to write back

  1. Document cover letter: A one-page cover letter for documents you are sending in response to an IRS request: what the notice asked for, what is enclosed, and nothing else.
